RQN Shareholder Paul Burke’s term on the Board of Directors of Equality Utah has been extended. He was first appointed in 2019. The mission of Equality Utah is to secure equal rights and protections for LGBTQ Utahns and their families.
RQN and Mr. Burke have provided pro bono representation to Equality Utah for several years. In 2013, Burke led a team of RQN attorneys, including John W. Mackay, in filing an amicus brief at the U.S. Supreme Court in the cases involving the Defense of Marriage Act and California Proposition No. 8 on behalf of the Utah Pride Center and a national coalition of equality groups, including Equality Utah.
Mr. Burke is a longtime champion of the LGBTQ community and has been recognized as a “Utah Hero” for his public advocacy. Burke and Mackay have authored a continuing series of columns in the Salt Lake Tribune on equality issues and, notably, they correctly predicted the arrival of marriage equality in Utah. Burke and Mackay published the most recent installment on June 3, 2022.
Mr. Burke was selected by the Utah Bar Commission as the Utah Bar’s Lawyer of the Year for 2019. Previously he was recognized in 2012 as the Utah State Bar’s Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year for his service to the public and the legal community.
