Thomas Lingard advises clients on all aspects of intellectual property, including the development of cohesive intellectual property portfolios that encompass patent preparation and prosecution, trademark application and registration, and enforcement strategies. He guides businesses in identifying, protecting, and leveraging their innovations through practical and strategic legal counsel.
Thomas prepares and prosecutes domestic and foreign patent applications across a wide range of technologies, including oil and gas drill bits, rotary steerable systems, downhole power systems, heavy material handling equipment, medical devices, exercise equipment, additive manufacturing, metallurgy, and materials science. He also evaluates potential infringement risks and provides patentability and patent infringement opinions.
Thomas manages trademark portfolios for clients in a wide variety of industries, including messaging applications, healthcare platforms, consumer goods, house marks, and individual product lines. He regularly prepares and files trademark applications for both new startups and established companies, advises on brand selection and clearance, and helps clients develop and implement long term brand protection strategies. His practice includes responding to USPTO Office Actions, managing international trademark portfolios, enforcing trademark rights, and guiding clients through all phases of the trademark lifecycle.
Before entering the legal profession, Thomas gained four years of field engineering experience in mining operations, working at various surface and underground mining operations across the United States and Canada. His hands-on engineering background gives him a practical, technical perspective that enhances his ability to secure meaningful protection for his clients’ intellectual property.
