Mr. Bouwhuis is a tax attorney who helps clients resolve disputes with the Internal Revenue Service, Utah State Tax Commission, local County Boards of Equalization, and other administrative agencies. He also advises clients with tax planning and compliance questions.

Tax Controversy
Mr. Bouwhuis represents clients in all stages of tax controversy, including audits and appeals with the Internal Revenue Service and Utah State Tax Commission, and tax litigation before the U.S. Tax Court, Utah State Tax Commission, and state and federal district courts.

Experience
Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Bouwhuis was a senior attorney with the IRS Office of Chief Counsel, a position he held for over ten years. During this time, Mr. Bouwhuis regularly provided training and guidance to Revenue Agents, Revenue Officers, and Appeals Officers. Mr. Bouwhuis also advised on hundreds of cases and tried numerous cases in U.S. Tax Court, including several high-dollar, complex tax matters. Mr. Bouwhuis has experience in, among other areas of tax law:

  • Audits, including IRS subpoenas and document requests
  • Income, deductions, and credits
  • Penalties and Additions to Tax, including civil tax fraud penalties
  • Innocent Spouse Relief
  • Collection Due Process
  • Collections, including liens, levies, special interest liens and transferee liability
  • Collection alternatives, including offers in compromise and installment agreements
  • Refund claims and refund litigation
  • Treatment of specialized topics such as captive insurance, employee retention credits, and Affordable Care Act compliance
