On behalf of RQN’s client, Santosh Lakkaraju, Maria Windham, Chair of RQN’s Immigration Law Practice Group, and associate Brit Merrill filed a complaint in federal court in Salt Lake City this month defending his right to U.S. citizenship against the U.S. State Department after it rejected his state court recognized adoption and denied him a U.S. passport. The complaint challenges the State Department’s refusal to accept the state court adoption and requests a declaration that Mr. Lakkaraju is a U.S. citizen who automatically gained citizenship through his adoption by a U.S. citizen adoptive parent.
The case, discussed by Maria Windham, was highlighted in the Deseret News – Utah. Read the article Citizenship in limbo for Utah man after feds refuse to recognize adoption.
The case demonstrates the important and notable work being done by RQN’s Immigration Law attorneys to defend clients’ basic rights.
