RQN Shareholder Paul C. Burke has been reappointed by Equality Utah to serve another three-year term on its Board of Directors. Equality Utah is the state’s leading LGBTQ civil rights organization whose mission is to secure and protect equal rights for LGBTQ Utahns and their families.  Mr. Burke was first appointed to its board in 2019 and is now slated to serve into 2028.

Mr. Burke is a longtime champion of the LGBTQ community and has been recognized as a “Utah Hero” for his public advocacy.

RQN and Mr. Burke have previously provided pro bono representation to Equality Utah and the Utah Pride Center.  In 2013, Mr. Burke led a team of RQN attorneys in filing an amicus brief at the U.S. Supreme Court on behalf of the Utah Pride Center and a national coalition of equality groups, including Equality Utah, in the cases that resulted in the demise of the Defense of Marriage Act and California Proposition No. 8.  His work defending the rights of an abused lesbian teenager was chronicled in the book “Saving Alex” and the 2019 Lifetime movie “Trapped: The Alex Cooper Story.”

Mr. Burke was selected by the Utah Bar Commission as the Utah Bar’s Lawyer of the Year for 2019. Previously, he was recognized in 2012 as the Utah State Bar’s Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year for his service to the public and the legal community.
