Through talent and determination, women lawyers have transformed the Utah State Bar. In 1872, the Utah State Bar had only two women in its ranks. For the next 100 years, only 91 women were admitted to the Bar. But times were changing in Utah. In 1976, 28 women joined the Utah Bar, finally bringing the number of women members of the Bar to over 100. These 119 women are referred to as “The First 100” or the “Trailblazers.” In 2021, the Utah State Bar counts almost 900 women among its ranks.
Throughout its 80 year history, many women lawyers have brought their individual skills, talent and legal acumen to Ray Quinney & Nebeker. This March, we honor these lawyers as part of the Firm’s history as we look towards building our future.
This video shares some perspectives from the Firm’s first woman President, Janet Hugie Smith, and our current President, Ellen J. D. Toscano.
