What to do if IRS-CI shows up at your home or office

As you may be aware, IRS has increased funding to hire and train new criminal investigators. IRS-CI’s 2023 Annual Report states that during 2023, 1,838 investigations were referred for prosecution with an 88% conviction rate and 79% incarceration rate. We will discuss how criminal tax investigations begin, the investigation process, and what you should do if an IRS criminal investigator shows up at your home or office.

Estate & Gift Tax Proposals: 2026 Sunset and Other Potential Changes Under a Trump or Harris Presidency

Come January 2025, the United States will have a new President and a new Congress. Among the many challenges that will confront the new administration is the rapidly approaching sunset of certain provisions of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act at the end of 2025, including the reduction of the federal estate tax exemption by 50%. Vice President Harris is proposing a variety of changes to the tax code, including potentially significant modifications to the estate and gift tax laws. President Trump has dramatically different proposals. Either way, future alterations to the estate planning world are likely. Mr. Stephenson and Mr. Tholen will review the various proposals and potential modifications.

Planning for the 2026 Estate Tax Exemption Sunset and 2024 Election

The estate and gift tax and GST exemptions are scheduled to “sunset” and be cut in half on January 1, 2026 from $13.61 million to approximately $6.5 million. In addition, the Harris Estate Tax Plan would further lower the estate and GST tax exemption to $3.5 million, eliminate the benefits of grantor trusts, and eliminate valuation interest discounts for non-business assets. Mr. Longmore and Mr. Gardner will discuss powerful planning strategies that can still be implemented ahead of these potential tax changes.
